I have a little toy I keep in the garage…. she’s stainless steel with gull wing doors and over 30 years old. I’ve had her 15 years and I don’t take her out nearly as often as I should. It’s funny how life can get away from you. I made some upgrades and did some overdue maintenance… kicked the tires and took her out for a spin. I’d forgotten the kind of looks people give you they see something unique on the road. Younger people look on with curiosity not knowing what it is, older people looking with remembrance trying to explain to their children about Back to the Future and Delorean. People, who once thought I was Marty, now see me as Doc and I smile all the same. A little recognition for a job well done, that doesn’t even affect them directly, but that little acknowledgement is nice lift if nothing else.
It’s funny how a kind word, a smile, or just some positive recognition goes a long way. Our industry is not just about bricks and mortar, it’s about people, service and relationships. A facility can be beautiful but without a good staff, the experience is a loss. A smile and a kind word go a long way, not just for your projects but for theirs.
Renovations, improvements or additions mean a great deal to a property… so give the feedback, give the recognition. Taking the time to relay to your service manager or the catering staff the feedback you’re getting from the client helps them gage what changes if any, are needed. It’s important to understand that good service compensates for those grey area issues that tend to creep up during an event. A positive attitude, positive feedback and an appreciation of a job well done can go a long way. Of course, if you see a silver Delorean driving down the road give the guy a thumbs up, a little acknowledgment is a nice lift if nothing else.
You’ll always be Marty to me love….. Does that make me Einstein?
